Shandong: Specialty Agricultural Industries Thrive on Saline-Alkali Land

On September 22, the 2026 "Boxing Prawn" Prawn King Contest opened in Boxing County, Binzhou, showcasing Shandong's achievements in developing specialty agriculture on saline-alkali land. In recent years, Shandong has advanced the integrated improvement and use of saline-alkali land, developing specialty crop farming and aquaculture suited to local conditions and transforming once-barren saline flats into sources of prosperity that boost local incomes. Boxing County has pioneered and promoted a model for farming marine prawn in low-salinity inland saline-alkali land. Its prawn farms now cover 35,000 mu and produce more than 30,000 tons annually. Zhanhua District has strengthened its signature Zhanhua winter jujube industry, with 300,000 mu under cultivation and an annual output value exceeding 7.5 billion yuan, helping more than 100,000 people increase their incomes. Drawing on its saline-alkali farmland, Wudi County has built an integrated cotton industry chain spanning cultivation, processing, textiles, and cultural tourism. The brand value of Dongying's Yellow River estuary hairy crab has exceeded 5.2 billion yuan, and the crabs sell well both at home and abroad. Shandong continues to strengthen the brands of its specialty agricultural products from saline-alkali land and improve entire industry chains, enhancing ecological benefits, upgrading local industries and raising people's incomes as it writes a new chapter in the efficient use of saline-alkali land.
