Why All Eyes Are on Shandong Agriculture

September 23 marked the ninth Chinese Farmers' Harvest Festival, and the land of Qilu is celebrating a bumper harvest. Shandong's agricultural sector is performing strongly: Agricultural exports have ranked first in the country for 27 consecutive years, the total output value of agriculture, forestry, animal husbandry, and fisheries has topped 1.3 trillion yuan, and grain output has remained above 110 billion jin (55 million metric tons) for five consecutive years.

Behind those standout numbers are three core strengths. First, Shandong has deepened development of the entire agricultural product industry chain. Backed by more than 2,000 local agricultural standards, it has helped smallholder farmers integrate into the modern agricultural system. Second, it has innovatively advanced an area-based approach to promote rural revitalization, building more than 2,000 rural revitalization areas - an approach that has been incorporated into the recommendations for the national 15th Five-Year Plan. Meanwhile, the province has vigorously advanced the application of science and technology in agriculture. Its contribution rate of agricultural scientific and technological progress has reached 68.5%. New technologies such as AI breeding and smart agricultural machinery are being widely deployed, shifting production from traditional factor-driven growth to digital technology-driven growth. All this shows that Shandong is steadily consolidating the foundation for high-quality agricultural development across the province.
