When It Comes to Cleanliness, Shandong Means Business

On World Cleanup Day, September 20, Shandong stepped beyond traditional one-dimensional cleanup efforts. Through comprehensive measures focused on source reduction, systematic management, and institutional empowerment, the province has embedded ecological cleanup and governance into its everyday development practices. Shandong is tackling waste at its source—the dining table. Leveraging "International Day of Zero Waste" activities, the province has encouraged over 900 government canteens to join the "Clean Plate Campaign". This initiative has significantly reduced food waste while simultaneously inspiring environmental volunteer efforts across multiple sectors. Localities are intensifying efforts to build "Zero-Waste Cities" by fostering numerous "zero-waste cells". They are developing green educational tours, creating carbon-negative islands, and improving the industrial chain for marine waste recycling. Regular beach cleanup campaigns are also being conducted to achieve the circular use of marine resources. Additionally, Shandong continues to expand its green manufacturing ecosystem, fostering over 1,000 provincial- and municipal-level green factories and industrial zones, which in turn drive green upgrades across thousands of enterprises. Furthermore, Shandong is upgrading its fiscal incentive and subsidy mechanisms for ecological civilization and broadening the scope of ecological compensation. By leveraging institutional dividends to empower ecological conservation, the province is making green and clean development the new norm.
