Shandong’s Mengyin County Develops a 10-Billion-Yuan “Sweet Economy”

In the golden autumn of September, Mengyin peaches enter their harvest season. Taking advantage of its location in the prime fruit-growing belt around 35°N, the county has 803,000 mu of land under peach cultivation. Both its planting area and output rank first among all counties in China. Annual production exceeds 2 billion jin, while the output value of the entire peach industry chain has surpassed 10 billion yuan. Together, these achievements have created a “sweet industry” that boosts farmers’ incomes and drives rural revitalization.

By investing in varietal improvement and quality enhancement, Mengyin has established close partnerships with 27 research institutes across China. It has promoted the early introduction and rollout in Mengyin of more than 80% of newly developed domestic peach varieties, and has developed premium new cultivars such as Zhongyoupan No. 9. The county has built an integrated digital supply chain combining standardized sorting, pre-cooling storage, and direct cold-chain shipment. Under an “enterprise + farmer + platform” model, peaches are harvested in the early morning, intelligently graded, and dispatched directly under the cold chain. In 2025, online sales totaled 21.5 million orders, helping more than 200,000 peach growers increase their incomes. Mengyin has also developed peach mystery boxes as a popular online product line, along with further-processed products such as dried peaches, peach jam, and peach wine. These efforts have diversified the sector and upgraded specialty agriculture across the entire value chain.
