In August, the Spring Capital Palace residential community in Yanzhou District, Jining, remains cool and comfortable indoors, despite the scorching heatwave outdoors. As a demonstration base for the development and utilization of shallow geothermal energy in southern Shandong, the community uses neither boilers nor air conditioners. Instead, it is equipped with U-shaped heat exchange tubes in over a thousand 100-meter-deep boreholes to harness the relatively constant underground temperature to provide natural cooling, maintaining a room temperature of around 26°C.
This is just one snapshot of how Shandong's geological technologies are being translated into practical applications. On August 13, the Information Office of the Shandong Provincial People's Government held a regular press conference at the Shandong Lunan Physical Geological Data Center in Yanzhou District, Jining. The event provided a systematic overview of the province's efforts to commercialize geological technologies and support green, low-carbon, high-quality development. Held in this underground library, the press conference drew geological science out of the traditional realm of prospecting and drilling and into the many facets of everyday life.
