Shandong: Transforming from a World Workshop to a Value Hub of the Aluminum Industry

In 2025, Shandong's alumina output exceeded one-fifth of the global total, with its aluminum product output ranking first in China, cementing its position as a major global production base. However, Shandong's aluminum industry remains at the mid-to-low end of the value chain. It lacks control over high-end aluminum products, pricing, and standard-setting, while its electrolytic aluminum production capacity has already hit the regulatory ceiling.

Industry leaders Weiqiao, Xinfa, and Nanshan are accelerating their transformations: Weiqiao is upgrading into a lightweight solutions provider, Xinfa is heavily focused on the circular economy, and Nanshan is achieving breakthroughs in high-end aerospace aluminum. Shandong is driving its aluminum industry's transition towards high-end and green development by expanding applications in sectors like new energy and rail transit. By cultivating an innovation ecosystem, the province is accelerating its leap from "largest in scale" to "value hub", ultimately aiming to secure a leading voice in the global aluminum industry.
