Shandong Promotes Construction of an Integrated Medical and Elderly Care System

On March 27, 2026, Xinhua News Agency reported that Shandong, as China's first demonstration province for integrated medical and elderly care, continues to advance the construction of medical and elderly care systems and is accelerating the formation of a new, integrated healthcare service model. By addressing the health and senior care needs of the elderly population, Shandong has introduced diverse service models such as "home-based medical care with visiting healthcare services" and "institution-based medical care with integrated hospital and care facilities". These initiatives promote deeper collaboration between senior care institutions and medical establishments. The province is piloting an initiative of "five-bed linkage", which connects senior care beds, medical beds, home-based senior care beds, home-based medical beds, and palliative care beds, ensuring seamless integration of various service resources. Utilizing smart digital platforms, rehabilitation equipment, and traditional Chinese medical therapies, local communities provide comprehensive services including health monitoring, rehabilitation training, daily care, and emotional support for seniors. By expanding service availability, improving quality, and strengthening support mechanisms, Shandong is steadily enhancing an inclusive and accessible medical-elderly care network that covers both urban and rural areas, effectively boosting the well-being and satisfaction of the elderly population. These efforts provide replicable "Shandong best practices" for advancing integrated medical and elderly care nationwide.
