Zaozhuang, Shandong: The Transformation Path of a Resource-Exhausted City

Zaozhuang, once thriving with coal, was renowned as the "century-old coal city". In its early stages, Zaozhuang resolutely implemented urban transformation strategies and patiently nurtured emerging industries. Currently, Zaozhuang has established a sound promotion mechanism of "chain leader + chain owner + alliance + fund," building a complete industrial chain spanning from lithium mining and processing to cathode materials, anode materials, electrolytes, separators, battery cells, testing and inspection, terminal applications, and dismantling and recycling.

Industrial achievements continue to emerge: Xieqing (Zaozhuang) Hydrogen Energy Technology Co., Ltd. has completed and operationalized its 1-billion-yuan small fuel cell system and hydrogen vehicle application project; Dingyu New Energy has passed pilot testing for materials like green vitriol by leading Chinese flow battery manufacturers and begun batch supply; Dingteng New Energy's high-performance sodium-ion cylindrical battery cells are expected to commence trial production by year-end. Today, Zaozhuang has earned two new titles, including a "famous city for new energy battery in China" and "national demonstration base for used car trading." It has consistently received an "Excellent" rating in the national performance evaluation for the transformation of resource-exhausted cities for four consecutive years.
