Recently, the Park Economic Research Center of CCID Consulting released the Ranking of Top 500 Provincial Development Zones for High-Quality Development. Henan, Shandong, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, and Hunan ranked the top five, leading in the number of zones included in the ranking. Among them, 36 zones are from Shandong.
Provincial development zones serve as a crucial engine for local economic development. As of 2024, China had more than 2,200 provincial zones, and Shandong housed around 170 zones at the provincial level or above.
Provincial development zones can create an industry development model driven by technological innovation to enhance their capabilities in this area. They should focus on transforming and upgrading traditional industries, promoting the application of digital intelligence and green technologies, and renewing equipment, optimizing processes, and innovating management practices within key industrial chains, as well as developing high-standard digital zones. Based on their unique development conditions, development zones should strategically lay out future industries such as humanoid robots, 6G technology, clean hydrogen, and new energy storage, and establish a mechanism for growth in investments in these emerging industries.
