Shandong is a major maritime province, with a coastline stretching 3,505 kilometers, accounting for about one-sixth of the national total. The adjacent marine area covers 158,600 square kilometers, roughly equal to the land area, making the ocean Shandong's greatest advantage and potential for economic and social development.
Shandong actively leverages its robust strength in marine science and technology to promote the deep integration of technological innovation and industrial innovation, accelerating the cultivation and development of new quality productive forces. Laoshan Laboratory has achieved standardized operations, and a total of 50 national-level marine research institutions and innovation platforms, including the Ocean University of China, the Institute of Oceanology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the National Marine Comprehensive Test Site (Weihai), have been attracted. Meanwhile, the province has established 236 marine technology platforms at or above the provincial level and cultivated over 1,000 high-tech enterprises involved in marine industries. Moreover, it boasts 23 full-time academicians and 50 recipients of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars in the marine field, both numbers ranking first in the country. Various technological innovation projects have been implemented, with breakthroughs being made in technical fields such as sea launching, deep-sea development, intelligent equipment, and biological breeding.
